On January 14, 2026, at approximately 4:24 am, Deputies Kenn Hasbargen and Cody Dillinger were dispatched to [ADDRESS REDACTED], north of Deer River, in Itasca County, in regard to a vehicle stuck in the ditch. The reporting party, Ryan Jordan Headbird, called dispatch to report that he had tried to turn around and got stuck. Headbird requested an ambulance for stomach pains. Dispatch advised that Headbird had been slurring his words on the phone. The above deputies arrived at the scene at approximately 4:35 am, at which time they located a vehicle facing westbound in the eastbound lane.
The vehicle was registered to Headbird. There was a male party standing outside the driver's side door, whom Deputy Dillinger recognized as Headbird from previous contacts. Headbird walked out of the ditch and was looking all around. Deputy Dillinger asked Headbird what was going on, at which time Headbird stated that he had gone into the ditch due to the fog. It should be noted that at that time, the weather was clear with no fog present. Headbird then asked to sit in the squad where it was warmer, to which Deputy Dillinger agreed.
Headbird stated that he had been driving to the Deer River hospital, but got stuck. Headbird then stated that he did not know where he was. When Deputy Dillinger asked whether he still saw fog, Headbird replied that he did, then rambled on unintelligibly. Headbird spoke rapidly and appeared confused. When asked, Headbird stated that he still saw heavy fog and that was why he was going to the hospital. Deputy Dillinger noted that Headbird's pupils were constricted and did not react to light. Headbird stated that his stomach hurt and gurgled.
He stated that he had not defecated recently, in which Deputy Dillinger was aware that use of controlled substances such as heroin or methamphetamine sometime cause constipation. Shortly thereafter, the ambulance arrived on scene to transport Headbird to the hospital, thereby precluding administration of field sobriety tests. A tow was contacted for the vehicle. Deputy Dillinger followed the ambulance to the Deer River hospital and requested that Deputy Hasbargen search the vehicle. Deputy Hasbargen later located a suspected methamphetamine pipe under the driver's seat.
Deputy Dillinger drafted a search warrant for a blood or urine sample from Headbird, which was signed by the Honorable Kimberly Wimmer at 5:25 am. Upon entering Headbird's room at the hospital, Deputy Dillinger notified Headbird of the search warrant for a blood or urine sample and that refusal to test would be an additional crime. Deputy Dillinger then asked Headbird to empty his pockets due to the fact that he would be searched at some point anyway. Headbird removed a cellphone and a small plastic baggie containing a white crystalline substance from his pocket.
