M., Winona Police Officers (Officers) were dispatched to a residence located in the City and County of Winona, Minnesota, regarding two individuals assaulting each other with shovels. When Officer arrived at the scene, he observed a women (Victim) outside of a home banging on the window. Victim [NAME REDACTED] at the house last night and she was trying to retrieve her property. Victim [NAME REDACTED] had been hit twice with a shovel, causing a bruise to her hand. Officer observed bruising and red marks to her hand.
Victim [NAME REDACTED]. Victim reported a male subject with red hair, later identified as Eric John Corey, [DOB REDACTED] (Defendant), was the person who hit her with a shovel. Officer knocked on the door to speak to Defendant. Defendant refused to answer the door and/or speak to Officers. Officers were able to speak to another male (Witness 1) inside the home. Witness 1 stated Victim showed up to the home two days prior to the incident. Witness 1 said Victim started to rummage through items in the house which did not belong to her.
As such, Victim was asked to leave but refused to. Witness stated he grabbed Victim’s arm to push her out the door and she grabbed onto the door frame and refused to let go. Witness reported that Defendant then grabbed Victim’s hand off the door frame and helped him push her out the door. Once Victim [NAME REDACTED], she began yelling and banging on windows and would not leave. Officer contacted the reporting party (Witness 2). Witness 2 stated he had walked past one of his house windows and when he looked outside, he witnessed the incident.
Witness 2 then showed Officer video footage of the incident. Officer observed the video. Officer observed Victim walking from the north side of the residence to the south door that faces 5th Street. Officer could see Defendant open the door briefly and then shut it. The door opens again and you can see Victim [NAME REDACTED]. Defendant appears to be holding a dark colored snow shovel and thrusts it towards Victim’s head. Defendant uses the snow shovel to throw snow at Victim’s head and face twice.
Defendant is then seen raising the snow shovel, with the shovel end in the air as if he is holding a baseball bat. Defendant then goes back into the residence for a brief time but comes back outside and starts swinging the shovel at Victim [NAME REDACTED]. Officers later made contact with Defendant. Defendant is observed as wearing the same clothes as the male in the video. Defendant was read his Miranda rights and 2 ••-CR-••-•••• Filed in District Court State of Minnesota 12/12/2025 agreed to speak to police.
Defendant reported the Victim was asked to leave the residence multiple times but kept returning. Defendant said Victim kept coming back yelling and banging on the windows. Defendant admitted he went outside to talk to her, and Victim [NAME REDACTED]. Defendant admitted he did take a snow shovel with him and threw snow in Victim’s face. Defendant denied swinging the shovel or striking Victim [NAME REDACTED]. PLEASE TAKE NOTICE: Pursuant to Minn.
