On 01/04/2026 at approximately 2118 hours, Carver County Deputy Roland Matus, along with other deputies were dispatched to a possible personal injury crash at Powers Boulevard and Lake Drive in the City of Chanhassen. Upon arrival, deputies observed a dark-colored Toyota 4Runner bearing Minnesota registration REW949 on the northbound side of Powers Boulevard. The vehicle was off the roadway, past the sidewalk, and into the tree line. It had heavy front-end damage. Tire tracks in the snow clearly indicated that the vehicle had been traveling northbound, left the roadway, and struck a tree.
Deputy Matus talked to the female party, Reanna Marie Everett. She said she was drriving, and they were going to Chanhassen when an argument broke out between her and Gilbertson. Everett stated that Gilbertson then grabbed the steering wheel and jerked it to the right causing the vehicle to crash. Everett stated that her and Gilbertson were dating, they lived together for three years, and they had no children together. Deputy Matus then read the Miranda warning to Gilbertson at 2132 hours, he stated that he understood his rights and had no objection answering my questions.
Gilbertson stated the following: a. Everett was driving, and Gilbertson was sitting in the passenger seat. B. Gilbertson and Everett were driving from the Kwik Trip in Carver, and he thought they were going to Wendy's, but he was not sure. C. Gilbertson and Everett were arguing because he mentioned something about his ex-girlfriend. Then Everett told him that they were going home, and she would have her ex-husband come over. D. Gilbertson and Everett were dating for about four years, they lived together.
E. Gilbertson tried to hold Everett's hand, and she got distracted and crashed into the trees. F. Gilbertson denied grabbing the wheel but admitted that he tried to grab Everett's hand to calm her down. Deputy Matus transported Gilbertson to 212 Medical Center in Chaska to get medically cleared before I could take him to the jail. At the hospital, while waiting for the doctor, Gilbertson stated that he really messed it up this time and he will be going to prison for a long time. At the time of the crash there were two minor children in the car with respective DOB’s of 12/04/2014 and 09/10/2021 who were living with Gilbertson and Everett.
Incident log notes stated that the boyfriend was bleeding on his face, and that a female could be heard saying, "I can't believe you did that Joe." Dispatch would later put in the incident log notes that the female was heard saying "you're such an idiot you could have killed my kids" and a child could be heard saying "why did Joe do that?" Ms. Everett further explained that they were driving to Wendy's restaurant in Chanhassen from their residence in Carver; that she and Gilbertson were arguing about an ex-girlfriend of Gilbertson and that she doesn't like to argue in front of her kids; that she told him that if he didn't stop arguing she was going to have her ex-husband come and "make him leave the house" which made Gilbertson mad.
