On December 3, 2025, JON DOUGLAS HASTERT – [DOB REDACTED] was terminated from his employment at the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MNDoT). HASTERT made comments about his mental health being in a bad place and insinuating self-harm. Concerns were reported to the St. Paul Police Department, and they conducted a welfare check on HASTERT. On December 4, AZ, an HR representative for MNDoT, called the State Patrol and again reported some concerns for HASTERT’s well-being due to some comments he made about self-harm to some coworkers.
The State Patrol contacted HASTERT by phone, discussed his safety and well-being, and ensured that he had resources. On December 5, HASTERT returned to MNDoT to turn in two keys. He behaved erratically and was aggressive with law enforcement. Eventually, HASTERT was notified that he was trespassed from the building and directed not to return. MNDoT continued to receive concerning communication from HASTERT. On December 15, at approximately 2:03 P.M., a MNDoT employee, NG, received a call from HASTERT at her work desk in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota.
HASTERT said, “I am going to f****** kill you.” NG immediately hung up the phone. HASTERT called back repeatedly, but NG did not answer. NG told police she is fearful for her life and extremely scared that HASTERT is going to kill her at work or at home. Police worked with the BCA to locate HASTERT by pinging his phone. At approximately 5:58 P.M., HASTERT’s location was tracked to a funeral home in St. Paul. Police responded but did not observe HASTERT’s vehicle. Police went inside and observed HASTERT speaking to people at the wake.
Police kept HASTERT under observation until he left the funeral home, at which point he was taken into custody. The arresting officer noted that HASTERT had a distinct chemical odor coming from his person consistent with methamphetamine use. HASTERT’s behavior was agitated, and he was unable to stand still. Police informed HASTERT that he was being arrested for Threats of Violence, and HASTERT immediately requested an attorney. HASTERT pointed out his parents in the parking lot, and police spoke with them.
His parents told police that HASTERT has bi-polar disorder and needs help. They said HASTERT was supposed to start substance abuse treatment in a few days and uses drugs. They reported that HASTERT was recently terminated from his employment, at which time he fell off the deep end and things got worse. While being transported to the Ramsey County Jail, HASTERT made comments about how he wished NG would die, suffer, and get into a car crash. HASTERT further stated that he would attack, punch, and beat up other coworkers when he sees them on the outside.
HASTERT also said that he would punch and fight with police and deputies at the jail. The investigator texted the phone number that the threat to NG came from. When the text was sent, an alert was received on HASTERT’s cell phone in evidence, which indicated that HASTERT’s phone was the device used to make the call to and threaten NG.
