On January 1, 2026, Officers of the Rochester Police Department were dispatched to a residence in NW Rochester, MN, Olmsted County. When they arrived, Officer Martinez spoke with Victim (juvenile male under the age of 17) stated that earlier that evening, his mom (Witness 1) had called MICHAEL MARTIN COZIK [DOB REDACTED] who was her boyfriend and resided with Victim [NAME REDACTED] at the NW address. Cozik had Witness 1's vehicle and she wanted it back, Victim [NAME REDACTED] had the vehicle at another female's house.
Witness 1 left the residence to get the vehicle, before she returned, Cozik brought the vehicle back. Victim [NAME REDACTED] in the driveway about where he was with Witness 1's vehicle. They began yelling at each other. Cozik grabbed Victim by the neck and put him in a chokehold. Victim was unable to breathe for about 10 seconds. Victim [NAME REDACTED] at Cozik to get him off of him. At some point Victim took out a pocket knife and Cozik got back into Witness 1's vehicle. Victim went to the vehicle and stuck his hand through a partially open window to unlock the door.
Cozik grabbed his arm and took the pocket knife from Victim. Cozik held Victim there until Victim [NAME REDACTED]. He then went inside and called police. Officer Martinez observed a scrape on Victim's hand and marks on his neck. Witness 2 (adult female identified in police reports) said that she saw Cozik put Victim into a chokehold and she intervened. Witness 3 (adult female identified in police reports) said she heard screaming and looked out the window. They saw Cozik on top of Victim in what appeared to be a chokehold.
Cozik spoke with an officer. Cozik said that he and Victim got into a pushing match and Victim [NAME REDACTED]. He denied a knife being present. Cozik denied going into the vehicle during the altercation. Officers found Victim's pocket knife in the vehicle. It was noted that Cozik was bleeding on his hands and that he had a bite mark on his arm.
