01/01/1971 (55), violated the law as set forth herein. On January 3, 2026, at approximately 8:53 PM, Douglas County Dispatch advised of 911 calls from the area of [ADDRESS REDACTED] in Alexandria reporting that a caller was being chased by someone with a knife. Multiple additional calls followed, but dispatch received limited information due to communication barriers. Douglas County Sergeant Daryl Giese and Alexandria Police Officer Nate Larson responded to Viking Village Apartments, located at [ADDRESS REDACTED]. Upon arrival, Sergeant Giese observed a male walking toward officers with his hands up.
The male was detained and searched for weapons, with none located, and officers noted a significant language barrier. Officer Larson later identified the male as Meles NMN Gebretinsaye, [DOB REDACTED] (55), Defendant herein. Sergeant Giese went to [APT REDACTED] and observed the interior door open. From the doorway, he saw a male lying a few feet inside the apartment and not appearing aware of officers’ presence. Sergeant Giese rolled the male over and observed he was alive but had a shirt “soaked in blood” and two apparent stab wounds to the abdomen.
Sergeant Giese requested an ambulance and provided medical treatment, including applying chest seals to the wounds. He noted the victim had no radial pulse and was extremely sweaty, which he associated with low blood pressure and shock. Officer Bryan Crary entered the apartment with other responding personnel and similarly observed the victim, later identified as Teshome Birat Mehari, [DOB REDACTED] (36), near the door and minimally responsive. Officer Crary observed what appeared to be two stab wounds and assisted with applying chest seals before the victim [NAME REDACTED] on a stretcher and transported by ambulance.
Officer Abigail Mumme also observed the victim in [APT REDACTED] with two stab wounds to his stomach and assisted Sergeant Giese with medical care. During the initial response, officers located a knife in the kitchen sink that appeared to have blood on it. Sergeant Giese reported that, while he was treating the victim, other officers advised they found a “steak knife” in the sink with what appeared to be blood. Officer Mumme likewise reported observing a kitchen knife in the sink with a red substance on it.
Detective Alec Swanson was requested for investigative assistance. Based on the information available, Detective Swanson drafted and obtained a search warrant for [ADDRESS REDACTED], [APT REDACTED], and executed the warrant at approximately 10:34 PM with Detective Elliott Draz and Officer Mumme. During the search, investigators located and collected items of evidentiary value, including DNA swabs of apparent blood from outside the apartment and door handles, apparent blood droplets inside, bedding with apparent blood, a kitchen knife in the sink with apparent blood, a cellphone on the kitchen table, and the victim’s red T-shirt containing apparent blood and two apparent stab defects.
