On or about January 10, 2026, at approximately 9:12 A.M., Minnesota State Trooper Klatt was on routine patrol and parked stationary in the City of Warba observing east and westbound Highway 2 traffic. Trooper Klatt observed an eastbound vehicle, whose driver had been holding their cell phone in front of their face, appearing to be manipulating the screen with their thumbs. Trooper Klatt initiated a traffic stop on Highway 2, near the intersection of County Road 74, in Itasca County, Minnesota. Trooper Klatt approached the vehicle and spoke to the sole occupant and driver, later identified as AARON MICHAEL OLSEN, [DOB REDACTED], hereinafter the Defendant.
The Defendant indicated he was texting his girlfriend regarding where he was headed. The Defendant indicated he did not have his driver’s license on him and, when asked, he advised that he did not have a driver’s license at all. Trooper Klatt confirmed the Defendant’s driver’s license status as revoked. While speaking with the Defendant, Trooper Klatt observed the Defendant’s movements to be fast, almost twitchy, and exaggerated. Additionally, the Defendant’s speech was fast and witty. Trooper Klatt noted his observations to the Defendant, who indicated that he was nervous.
The Defendant stated that he last used fentanyl, which had been possibly laced with methamphetamine, a couple weeks prior. Trooper Klatt then had the Defendant complete field sobriety testing. Trooper Klatt noted that the Defendant’s heart rate was 134 beats per minute and that his eye lids began to flutter during the Romberg test. Due to these observations, Trooper Klatt informed the Defendant that he believed the Defendant used controlled substances more recently than two weeks prior. The Defendant then admitted to methamphetamine and fentanyl use about four days prior.
The Defendant explained he used a “speedball” with a friend. Trooper Klatt then arrested the Defendant for driving while under the influence of a controlled substance. While conducting a search incident to arrest of the Defendant’s person, Trooper Klatt found a folded piece of aluminum foil in the Defendant’s left breast pocket. The Defendant stated it was “dope.” Trooper Klatt then conducted a search of the vehicle. The Defendant indicated that the black backpack in the passenger seat was his. In the black backpack, Trooper Klatt located multiple one-hitter pipes, a black case with three small plastic baggies, a hypodermic needle, and an unused canister of Narcan nasal spray.
Additionally, Trooper Klatt found two plastic baggies that held trace residue which appeared white and powdery and a third plastic baggie that contained two, small, pebble-like spheres. Later, Trooper Klatt also located three circular pills with the engraving “54 411” on the side.” These pills were identified as buprenorphine, a Schedule III Controlled Substance. Trooper Klatt took a Mirandized statement from the Defendant, who stated that the substance in his breast pocket was more than likely a speedball, which he defined as a mixture of fentanyl and methamphetamine.
