Probable Cause
On March 11, 2026, Carlton County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Skurla initiated a traffic stop on an older vehicle traveling on a roadway in Carlton County for having a burnt-out license plate light and a non-functioning third brake light. Upon approaching the vehicle, Deputy Skurla identified the driver as Damian Michael Porter [DOB REDACTED] hereinafter Defendant. Defendant driver’s license was revoked at the time of the traffic stop. While interacting with Defendant, Deputy Skurla noticed that there was no key in the ignition while the vehicle was running and the steering column and dash appeared damaged.
During the traffic stop, Deputy Skurla ran the VIN on the vehicle and discovered that the vehicle had been stolen out of Minneapolis. Deputy Skurla was advised that the law enforcement agency that entered the stolen vehicle would like the vehicle towed. The vehicle was searched and Deputy Skurla located suspected methamphetamine in a Nike bag that was on the driver’s seat where Defendant was sitting. The suspected methamphetamine was field tested which produced a positive result for methamphetamine.
The methamphetamine had a field weight of 1.28 grams. Deputy Skurla also found several debit cards, documents and a check belonging to L. S. Deputy Skurla was aware that those cards and documents were in her vehicle that was stolen on March 9th. The check belonging to L. S. Was written for $200. PLEASE TAKE NOTICE: Pursuant to Minn. Stat. 609.49, intentional failure to appear for duly scheduled court appearances may result in additional criminal charges, and in addition to any arrest warrant that may otherwise be issued by the Court.
