This case involves a law enforcement encounter.
On March 11, 2026, at approximately 8:30 A.M., Detective Brogan of the Mower County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at 1010 7th Street SE in the City of Austin, County of Mower. The search warrant was obtained as part of a narcotics investigation into the address and its resident, JONATHAN WILLIAM TALAMANTES, DOB/111586, the defendant herein. The defendant is a violent felon prohibited from possessing firearms. Upon law enforcement entry into the residence, the defendant, his son, J. R. T. (an 11-year-old juvenile) and A. A. D. (an adult female) exited the home.
The defendant was detained and Det. Brogan read him the Miranda warning. The defendant told Brogan there would likely be a user pack of methamphetamine somewhere in the house. While the search was conducted, the defendant’s wife, K. L. H., arrived at the residence. Det. Brogan read her the Miranda warning and K. L. H. Agreed to speak with the detective. K. L. H. Stated that she lives in the home with the defendant, A. A. D., and J. R. T. She stated that she did not know of any firearms in the home and that she did not know of any drugs in the home other than legal marijuana.
K. L. H. Stated that she has been sober for eight years. K. L. H. Advised that the defendant and J. R. T. Are the only ones that normally hang out in the basement. During the search of the residence, law enforcement located the following items: Plastic gum container with two bags containing meth located in the main floor living room. Heritage MFG.22 Caliber Revolver located in the NW corner of the basement on a half wall Empty box of ammunition for.22 short caliber, located in NE corner of basement on top of half wall The plastic container containing the two bags of methamphetamine was taped up laying on the top of towels that were in a laundry basket in the living room area.
The contents of the two bags field tested positive for methamphetamine and weighed 4.2 grams and 0.17 grams without packaging. The defendant was placed under arrest and transported to the Mower County Jail. Det. Brogan then applied for and was granted a search warrant for a known DNA sample from the defendant. Det. Brogan went to the jail and met with the defendant. Brogan reminded the defendant of his rights. The defendant stated that he understood and agreed to speak with the detective. The defendant admitted to obtaining the firearm and stated he had the gun for approximately one week.
The defendant stated the gun was in the rafters, but he stated that he “panicked” when he realized law enforcement was at his door, so he put it in the basement where it was located. The defendant also provided his DNA sample pursuant to the search warrant. A review of the defendant’s criminal history reflects prior convictions for Aggravated Robbery – 1st Degree dated April 13, 2004 (Freeborn County District Court file 24-K9-03-001292); 2nd Degree Assault – Dangerous Weapon dated December 15, 2006 (Mower County District Court file 50-CR-06-1770); Domestic Assault By Strangulation dated March 17, 2011 (Mower County District Court file 50-CR-10- 851); felony 5th Degree Drugs and felony 4th Degree Assault dated January 24, 2013 (Mower County District Court file 50-CR-12-1797); 1st Degree Drugs dated March 5, 2015 (Freeborn County District Court file 24-CR-14-769); 3rd Degree Assault dated July 30, 2015 (Mower County District Court file 50-CR-14- 1957); 5th Degree Drugs dated November 18, 2024 (Mower County District Court file 50-CR-24-396).
