On 03/04/2024 at approximately 10:23 P.M., Scott County Deputies were dispatched to **** Century Lane, Credit River, Scott County, Minnesota, for a welfare check. The reporting party, Stuart Lieber, was requesting a welfare check on his soon-to-be ex-wife, JENNIFER LYNN LIEBER, [DOB redacted], hereinafter referred to as the Defendant, whom he said was acting weird. Dispatch advised that a child at the house said that the Defendant said she was going to kill herself. At the residence, a deputy was met by the Defendant and Amy Jo Steenberg, a friend of the Defendant’s, at the front of the house.
The Defendant made a comment that she, “really f***** up,” and went back into the house. The deputy spoke with Steenberg who reported she wasn’t entirely sure what happened but David Joseph Nanovic, [DOB redacted], hereinafter the Deceased, may be deceased after she saw him covered in blood at the bottom of the stairs. The Defendant had told her that she had been in an argument with the Deceased, the Deceased had a handgun, and she kicked it out of his hand and it went off and hit the Deceased. Deputies called the Defendant on the phone and had the Defendant came out of the house.
Deputies then found the Deceased, at the bottom of the stairs. He was covered in blood and a handgun was located next to his body. Medics arrived and declared he was deceased. Deputies then located a young child in the pool house and brought him to safety. The child was identified as JHN, [DOB redacted]. JHN is the son of the Deceased. The Defendant allowed the Deceased and JHN to live at the house and the Deceased and Defendant began a romantic relationship with one another. JHN stated "Jennifer is probably freaking out because she had the gun in her hand." Deputies interviewed JHN, who stated: He, the Deceased and the Defendant reside at the house.
On this night they were all sitting on the couch watching TV. The Defendant became very agitated and went and got a handgun, which she carried around the rest of the night. Defendant was yelling at them, pointing the gun at them, and threatening to kill them. The Defendant was calling the Deceased racial slurs and hurtful things to him. The Defendant has done this in the past as well as physically abused the Deceased. The Defendant had been drinking beer and blackberry brandy all evening. He described the home as “living in hell.” He and the Deceased went to the pool house at about 9:30 P.M. At one point, the juvenile children of Defendant and Stuart Lieber, CWL, and BSL, came down to the pool house and said their mother was acting crazy, and they departed shortly thereafter.
At about 10:00 P.M., he got a call from CWL who was concerned and wanted them to check on the dogs. JHN and the Deceased attempted to approach the house. The Defendant went outside the house with a handgun and told them not to come in and fired a shot. He and the Deceased returned to the pool house. The Deceased decided to try again and went to the house. He said that the Deceased went to the house with his hands raised. That was the last time he saw his father. He waited for his father to return, but he did not.
