On April 19, 2024, at about 5:26 AM, Trooper Bruns of the MN State Patrol was dispatched to a crash on southbound 52 in Olmsted County. A Chevy Impala had hit a cable median barrier and went into the ditch on the west side of the highway. Olmsted County deputies arrived first and aired that the vehicle was unoccupied. The driver's side of the door was unable to be opened due to damage, the front driver's side tire was sheered off, and there was major damage done to the front of the vehicle. The initial 911 caller, Witness 1 (adult male identified in police reports) returned to the scene and told Trooper Bruns that from the time he called 911 to the time officers responded, there would not have been enough time for another vehicle to pick up the driver of the Impala.
Witness said that he was driving southbound when the Impala passed him and the Impala was going over 100 MPH. The vehicle was swerving across both lanes of traffic. In the car, Trooper Bruns saw a ID for the registered owner of the vehicle, JOSEPH ERWIN DANIELSON [DOB REDACTED]. On the passenger side floorboard there was also a bag of dried mushrooms that were consistent with psychedelic mushrooms. On the ground outside of the passenger door was a set of keys and a cell phone. Deputies located a male laying in a field about 50-60 yards from the vehicle.
He was trying to conceal himself. The male was identified as Danielson. While he was laying on the ground, Trooper Bruns could smell a strong odor of consumed alcoholic beverage coming from Danielson. Danielson said he drank the night before and was probably still intoxicated. His eyes were bloodshot, glassy, and watery. Danielson denied driving and said that "Kyle" was. He did not know where Kyle was. Danielson provided a PBT sample of.101. A search warrant was granted for a sample of Danielson's blood or urine.
He provided a urine sample at 7:02 AM. The results from the urine sample showed that Danielson's BAC was.07. The bag of suspected mushrooms were also tested. They tested positive for psilocyn and delta-9 THC. The mushrooms weighed 4.687g. Psilocyn is a Schedule I controlled substance. PLEASE TAKE NOTICE: YOU MUST APPEAR FOR EVERY COURT HEARING REGARDING THIS CASE. FAILURE TO APPEAR FOR COURT IS A CRIMINAL OFFENSE AND MAY RESULT IN ADDITIONAL CRIMINAL CHARGES BEING IMPOSED AND PUNISHED AS PROVIDED IN MINNESOTA STATUTES SECTION 609.49.
