On or about March 5, 2026, at approximately 7:40 AM, law enforcement officers with the Faribault Police Department responded to a weapons complaint in the area of 6th Street NW, Rice County, Minnesota. The reporting party is an aide on a school bus for the Faribault Transportation. The reporting party described to law enforcement the bus was moving when she observed a male holding what she believed to be a long gun. The male got closer to the bus, getting on the sidewalk, then coming on the road, and pulling the gun up.
The reporting party described the house and went with law enforcement to the area. The reporting party affirmatively pointed to a house, saying it was the home the male had exited, with the gun in his hands. The residence was located in the 200 block of 8th Street NW. Law enforcement reviewed video from inside the bus; law enforcement observed a noticeable change in the reporting parties demeanor and then she stands up and says "What the heck was that?" She looks back at something they passed and says "that guy was pointing a gun at us!" At this point, the bus was in the area of 8th Street NW and 2nd Avenue NW, Faribault.
There were 9 children present on the bus. Law enforcement learned Alex Jeffrey WOLTERS, [DOB REDACTED], the defendant, resides at the residence and was suspect in displaying the gun. Law enforcement set a perimeter around the house. WOLTERS exited the house and was apprehended by law enforcement. In a post-Miranda statement WOLTERS described he checked the insulation on the 3rd floor of the house and he went out to the garage that morning. WOLTERS denied pointing anything at someone that went by his house that morning.
WOLTERS' father, MAW, described that WOLTERS does not live alone at the residence, but he would have been the only person at the residence that morning around the time of the incident. MAW informed law enforcement WOLTERS uses marijuana. Law enforcement searched the residence and a detached garage on the property. In the attic of the property, law enforcement located a copper tube, approximately 3 feet long. Nearby was black plastic tubing. The black tube was taped together with another curved tube.
The copper tube fit inside the black plastic tube. When placed together, it had the same distinct shape of a long gun. Also located in the residence was a spent 30-06 shell casing found on an antenna, in the basement bedroom. Inside the garage, law enforcement located 2 large gun safes. One safe was gray in color and locked with a dial style lock; the other, brown in color, locked with a barrel style key lock. MAW told law enforcement the dial lock should be left at the number 90, if it was not at 90, it had been tampered with.
Law enforcement observed the dial on the gray safe was halfway between 90 and 0. The door to the brown safe appeared to be partially open at the top, however it was locked. MAW claimed to be the only person with access to the safes; the owner manuals, key, and combination are stored in his unlocked vehicle. Located in the brown safe was: black Daisy pellet rifle; brown Daisy pellet rifle. Located in the gray safe was: Marlin.22 rifle; Victor.22 LR pistol; Marlin.22 rifle with scope; 2-.22 caliber rounds located in the Marlin rifle with a scope; Winchester.22 rifle; Sears Robuck 12 gauge shotgun; High Standard 12 gauge shotgun; and a Mosburg 12 gauge shotgun.
