On 5/3/26 at about 20:19 hours, Minnesota State Troopers responded to a report that a blue Ford Mustang had been struck by a semi after the Mustang made an illegal U-turn through the median of ISTH 694. The Mustang then drove away, exited at White Bear Ave, and stopped in the Wendy’s parking lot in Maplewood, Ramsey County. The female driver then exited the Mustang and was walking away. A Trooper found the suspect, later identified as Makayla May SCHULTZ [DOB REDACTED], walking through the Maplewood mall parking lot and stopped her.
SCHULTZ provided the Trooper a false name and DOB. When confronted, SCHULTZ provided her true identity. SCHULTZ said her boyfriend had a flat tire on the highway and she was bringing him a tire iron. She said she did a U-Turn in the median to go east on ISTH 694 at which time she was struck by a semi-truck. SCHULTZ said she then continued driving to the White Bear Ave exit, parked at Wendy’s, and walked towards the Maplewood Mall. SCHULTZ said she fled the scene because she was scared. SCHULTZ’s driver’s license status was revoked.
The Trooper saw that SCHULTZ’s hand was twitching and her pupils were dilated. When asked, SHULTZ admitted using methamphetamine. SCHULTZ performed poorly on Standardized Field Sobriety Testing and was arrested. The Mustang SCHULTZ had been driving (MN/TPE294) had heavy rear end damage. During a search of the vehicle, the Trooper found a purse. In the purse was a half full syringe, a scale, and a large plastic bag containing a white powdery substance suspected to be methamphetamine. The substance later field- tested positive for methamphetamine with a net weight of 40.4 grams.
Troopers spoke to Howard Allen HEROLD Jr [DOB REDACTED] who witnessed the crash. He said he met SCHULTZ a few days earlier and she was coming to help him change his tire on the highway. HEROLD said he saw SCHULTZ pull into the median and then “she pulled out literally right in front of a semi.” Troopers also spoke to the semi driver, AH, who said the Mustang pulled out in front of him after doing a U- Turn in the median. He said he rear-ended it and then it drove off and exited at White Bear Ave.
Pursuant to a search warrant, the Trooper obtained a sample of SCHULTZ’s blood and submitted it to the BCA for testing. Results of that testing are pending.
