On November 2, 2024, Deputy Torkelson was dispatched to an incident near 1800 2nd Avenue NW in the Township of Kalmar, within Olmsted County, Minnesota. Reporting Party and Victim ([NAME REDACTED]), an adult male fully identified in police reports, met with Deputy Torkelson and reported a road rage incident. R. P. Was driving through the Somerby neighborhood when he was followed by a silver Ford Raptor. R. P. Stated that the driver of the Ford Raptor was a neighbor, but did not know his name. The driver was later identified as Matthew John Ahlberg [DOB REDACTED]. R. P. Stated that Ahlberg passed him and made a motion at him.
Once the Raptor was in front of R. P., Ahlberg slammed on the brakes, forcing both vehicles to come to a stop. R. P. Reported that both he and Ahlberg got out of their vehicles. Ahlberg approached R. P. And grabbed the front of his sweatshirt and slammed him onto the front of R. P.'s vehicle. R. P. Advised that the contact was hard enough to knock the lens out of his sunglasses. Deputy Deruiter, who also responded, observed that R. P.'s truck had a cleaner spot on the front, where R. P. Reported he made contact with the front of the truck.
R. P. Reported that Ahlberg said, "Don't ever drive like that through Somerby again." When Deputy Torkelson spoke with Ahlberg about the incident, Ahlberg stated that he did pass R. P. On County Rd 5 and motioned for him to pull over. Ahlberg reported that R. P. Had been driving recklessly through the neighborhood. Ahlberg stated he wanted to yell at R. P. Ahlberg stated that he told R. P. "To never drive like that through the neighborhood ever again." Deputy Deruiter took photos of a red mark on R. P.'s back.
R. P. Went to the emergency room later that night, where he was diagnosed with a concussion and whiplash. R. P. Also provided a photo of a bruise on his chest where Ahlberg had grabbed him. Follow-up medical records confirmed that R. P. Was diagnosed with a cognitive disorder due to brain injury, post-concussion syndrome, and loss function vision. R. P. Reported difficulty reading, a need for glasses, and regular headaches. Testing and evaluation completed one year later showed that R. P. Continues to have measurable impairment to cognitive status.
