On or about January 5, 2026, a probation officer contacted the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office to report a domestic assault on behalf of the victim. The victim had contacted the probation officer and reported that ALVIN ERVIN HERSCH, [DOB REDACTED], the defendant, had punched and pushed the victim to the ground twice and made a comment that the defendant was going to kill the victim, get a gun and shoot himself, and then light the house on fire. The victim [NAME REDACTED] from the house and was currently in a motor vehicle on their property in Otter Tail County, Minnesota.
When the probation officer had specifically asked the victim [NAME REDACTED] had assaulted her, the victim [NAME REDACTED] would not answer that question and she would not allow the probation officer to connect those dots. Law enforcement responded and located the defendant and the victim [NAME REDACTED]. It appeared the victim [NAME REDACTED] in the bathroom. A sergeant spoke with the victim. She indicated that the defendant had been acting in a suicidal manner and made threats toward the victim about killing her and lighting the house on fire.
The victim was concerned about the defendant’s mental health. The victim [NAME REDACTED] had been assaulting the victim over the past several days, although she said she did not have any visible injuries. The victim [NAME REDACTED] incident where she had been in the kitchen when the defendant pushed or struck the victim from behind and pusher her into the dog gate. It was also alleged that the defendant had taken the victim’s keys when she called for assistance. There were two sets of keys on the defendant’s person when he was arrested.
The victim had also sent a text message earlier that morning to a detective regarding the defendant’s threats and behavior. Law enforcement was aware of past assaultive incidents between the two.
