On January 15, 2026, Mille Lacs County Tribal Police Officer J. Walker spoke with M. S. J., an adult female fully identified in police reports, regarding an assault by her boyfriend, Defendant SHAWN JEFFREY WHITEHORSE [DOB REDACTED]. M. S. J. Reported that she had been driving southbound on Highway 169 with Defendant in the passenger seat. When they were just south of Timber Trail Road, located in Onamia, Mille Lacs County, Defendant got angry with her and demanded she pull over, which she did. M. S. J. Stated he was very aggressive with her, and told her to get out of the vehicle.
M. S. J., who has an amputated foot, attempted to exit the vehicle and grab her wheelchair, but Defendant grabbed her arm to prevent her from exiting and pulled her back into the vehicle. He then grabbed her by the face, causing several scratch marks on the left side of her face. He put her in a headlock with his left arm. M. S. J. Stated she did not feel free to leave, and that she was being confined and possessed by Defendant; she feared that if she did manage to get out, he might get into the driver’s seat and run her over.
She reported that he told her to drive, and she continued southbound on Highway 169. Defendant was punching the dashboard of the vehicle, and at one point grabbed the steering wheel with both hands, causing the vehicle to swerve. M. S. J. Stated she believed Defendant was attempting to crash the vehicle, and she had to use both hands to keep it from crashing. M. S. J. Stated Defendant wanted her to drive to their residence on Ataage Drive, Onamia, but she feared a worse assault would take place if she was at the residence with him; so she instead drove into the parking lot of the Grand Casino Mille Lacs, [ADDRESS REDACTED] in Onamia, attempting to get to the hotel’s main entrance where there were surveillance systems.
However, Defendant made her pull over before they got to the entrance. She then attempted to call a friend for help, but Defendant noticed she was calling someone and fought with her over the phone. Defendant again put her in a headlock with his left arm and used his right to squeeze her neck with force. M. S. J.’s breathing was restricted and she was unable to call for help. Defendant eventually got out of the vehicle, and M. S. J. Frantically drove away. Officer Walker observed fresh red bloody scratch marks along the upper left side of her neck and ear, and scratch marks around the middle of her throat.
He observed that the injuries appeared to be consistent with being scratched, grabbed, and strangled. A KOPS Alert was issued for Defendant. He was located later that day on the gaming floor of the casino. He was taken into custody and searched incident to arrest. During that search, Officers observed what appeared to be blood droplets on his white pants. Defendant was then transported to the Mille Lacs County Jail. PLEASE TAKE NOTICE: Pursuant to Minn. Stat. § 609.49., intentional failure to appear for duly scheduled court appearances may result in additional criminal charges, and in addition to any arrest warrant that may otherwise be issued by the Court.
