On March 6, 2026, at approximately 9:31 P.M., Edina Police Department officers investigated a 911 report that people were fighting in the hallway of an apartment complex, in Edina, Hennepin County, Minnesota. The 911 caller said they saw blood in the hallway and heard someone threaten to shoot someone else. The caller said that the incident involved numerous people wearing dark clothing and masks. As police arrived they saw four people run to a Toyota Camry. Police detained and identified the Camry's occupants as: driver, Co-respondent I. S. A.; front passenger, Co-respondent A. Y. A.; rear driver's side passenger, Co-respondent M. A.M.; and rear passenger's side occupant, Co-respondent A.M. K. Officers also located an identified man, Victim A. S. A., who was holding another male, Defendant ZAKARIYA ABDINASIR ALI, D. O. B. 02/18/2008, on the ground near the front of the apartment building.
Victim was bleeding from a laceration on the top of his head. Victim told police that Defendant threw a gun in some nearby bushes. Officers searched those bushes and located a black Glock 9 millimeter pistol equipped with a red "switch" that enabled the gun to fire multiple rounds with one pull of the trigger. Victim said that he came to the apartment complex to meet a female he met two days earlier via SnapChat. When he arrived, Co-respondent A. Y. A., who was wearing a face mask, let him inside the building and led him down a hallway.
Near a stairwell inside the building, several males confronted and assaulted Victim by striking him with their fists and with pistols. Victim said the group struck him repeatedly with the slides of the pistols. Occasionally the assailants took the magazines out of the pistols and racked their slides before pointing the guns at Victim. The assailants also demanded and eventually took Victim's car keys. One of the assailants stayed with Victim while the rest apparently went to Victim's car. The group returned and continued assaulting Victim while demanding that he send them money from his phone.
Victim refused to acquiesce to their demands, but the assailants continued to strike him with their pistols, hold him at gunpoint, and demand money. Victim saw the assailants pass the pistols around to each other and said that all of them struck him with a pistol at some point. Victim said he lost consciousness at one point during the assault, which seemed to last approximately five minutes. Eventually, Co-respondent A. Y. A. Returned and told the group that police were arriving, which prompted the assailants to run out of the building.
Victim said he chased Defendant, caught him, and wrestled with him outside where police found them. Victim said Defendant Ali threatened him with the Glock 9mm pistol with the switch before throwing it in the bushes. Victim said he held Defendant down on the ground to prevent him from leaving until police came. Police found Victim's car. Its trunk was partially open and some of Victim's property was strewn on the ground. Victim's property inside the car was also scattered as if someone had rummaged through it.
