On October 21, 2025, Minneapolis Police Department Officer(s) received a report concerning a business located on the 2300 block of University Avenue NE in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. Through investigation, the officer learned that a suspect gained entry to the roof of the business on October 19, 2025 by climbing an enclosed trailer that was parked next to the business. The reporting party subsequently observed damage to HVAC unit(s) and the hood ventilation system of the business, which are located on the roof of the business.
The systems appeared to have been stripped of copper and/or other metals, resulting in damage to the system. The reporting party also noted that the roof of the business includes a door leading into the business. Reporting party observed that the first floor of the business had more copper and metals removed from the hood ventilation system and HVAC units on the first floor of the business. Through investigation and video review, the suspect was observed on video touching several areas with their bare hands.
Two pairs of pliers were also located on the roof. The pliers were believed to be used by the suspect to cut the copper. A friction ridge impression was recovered from a damaged HVAC unit on the roof of the business, which was found to be consistent with the right index fingerprint of Paul William Brekkestran [DOB REDACTED], "Defendant" herein. The investigator also recognized Defendant from an offense on October 22, 2025. Defendant was charged with the October 22, 2025 conduct in court file number 27-CR-25-30701. Notably, the suspect in this case was wearing the same clothing as in the October 22, 2025 incident.
An estimate to repair the damage caused by this conduct is estimated to cost $585,890.00 to repair and/or replace. SPRIEGL NOTICE: The State intends to introduce evidence at trial from the October 22, 2025 incident to prove identity in this case.
