On June 2, 2025, at approximately 12:45 A.M., Minnesota State Patrol were patrolling I-94 westbound near Plymouth Avenue in Minneapolis, Hennepin County. At this time, the trooper observed a Ford Explorer (MN HJB966) weaving over the lane lines and failing to signal a lane change. The trooper activated their emergency lights to stop the Ford, which was delayed in pulling over. The trooper approached the vehicle and identified the driver as WARSAME FARAH DIRIE [DOB REDACTED], Defendant herein. While speaking with Defendant, the trooper observed he had bloodshot and watery eyes, was fidgeting seemingly uncontrollably, had dilated pupils, and was randomly grinding his jaw.
Defendant also had a Ziplock bag protruding from his left shirt pocket. The trooper had Defendant exit the vehicle to perform standardized field sobriety testing, during which he observed multiple clues of impairment. Prior to attempting a preliminary breathalyzer test, the trooper attempted to visually inspect Defendant's mouth to ensure it was empty. The trooper observed Defendant was chewing and evaded showing the trooper his mouth. When Defendant did flash his tongue at the trooper, it was green.
Defendant provided a PBT sample of.000 BAC. The trooper then checked Defendant's vitals which were elevated above the Drug Recognition Evaluator ranges. The trooper then placed Defendant under arrest and removed the Ziploc from his shirt pocket. The Ziploc contained a green leafy substance the trooper recognized as akin to Khat. The trooper also located a sandwich sized Ziploc with the same green leafy substance in Defendant's vehicle. Defendant was transported and the trooper obtained a search warrant for Defendant's blood or urine.
Defendant agreed to provide a sample and the sample and suspected controlled substances were sent for processing. On August 6, 2025, the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) issued a report revealing that on the date of the incident, Defendant had cathine and cathinone in his system. On October 23, 2025, the BCA issued a report showing the collected controlled substance tested positive for 117.81 grams containing cathinone, the active ingredient found in Khat, which is a Schedule I controlled substance.
At present, Defendant is not in custody.
