On September 10, 2025, around 8:11 AM, Centennial Lakes Police Department responded to a suspected overdose of a 43-year-old male, C. J. Found unresponsive on the dining room floor of his home located on Main Street in the City of Centerville, Anoka County. The reporting party was C. J.’s wife, K. J., who had left around 7:35 AM to drop their children off at school. When K. J. Left, C. J. Was outside playing with their dog, when she returned home, she found C. J. Face-down on the floor. K. J. Called 911 immediately and dislocated her shoulder while attempting to roll C. J. Over and medics took over life-saving measures, which were unsuccessful.
K. J. Indicated C. J. Had a history of fentanyl use, but she believed he had not used in three months, although he acted abnormal yesterday. Officers located burnt aluminum foil with residue, a lighter, and a metal straw near C. J.’s body. C. J. Had a large contusion and laceration above his right eye and blackened eyes. The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office reported C. J.’s cause of death as “toxic effects of fentanyl” specifically diagnosing pulmonary edema, cerebral edema, cardiomegaly, and coronary artery stenosis.
Postmortem toxicologic analysis of the femoral blood detected the presence of drugs contributing to death including fentanyl (a schedule II controlled substance), and it’s breakdown products—norfentanyl and 4-ANPP. C. J.’s cell phone extraction yielded a deleted text message thread with a contact saved as “Garrett” (612- 559-0112), who investigators identified as Garrett Alexander Dahl [DOB REDACTED], Defendant herein. The text message thread started on June 11, 2025, and contained multiple messages referencing narcotics transactions.
On September 9, 2025, C. J. Sends a message, “Where can I send the uber. I need 100 worth. Not for me. But I need to do it now.” Defendant responds, “Im trying to find a box for it to go in.” Defendant eventually sends C. J. An address on North 4th Street. C. J. Texts, “I requested a package from you through Uber. Tap to track progress:” C. J. Sends a screenshot of him sending Defendant $80 via Cash App. C. J. Texts, “you see him…outside of the Cameron.” C. J.’s phone also showed that he and Defendant called each other approximately 15 times on September 9, 2025, between 1:03 PM and 2:25 PM. The address provided by Defendant was found to be an apartment building called the “Cameron.” The Cash App profile Defendant gave C. J. Was registered to “Garrett Dahl” with phone number [PHONE REDACTED]. Uber records confirmed C. J. Sent an Uber to pick up a package at the address Defendant provided.
