On July 16, 2024, an officer stopped a vehicle travelling in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, because the vehicle was driving above the posted speed limit. The vehicle did not immediately pull over for the officer, even after the officer activated his squad lights and then sirens. The vehicle eventually slowed and stopped. When an officer approached the vehicle, he saw an open beer bottle in the cup holder of the center console. The driver and front seat passenger were both removed from the vehicle.
While standing outside of the vehicle, an officer observed a handgun under the front passenger seat. The firearm was removed from the vehicle. The front seat passenger was identified as KAYRON TYRELL COOK [DOB REDACTED]. A live round of ammunition was located in COOK’s pocket. After being advised of his constitutional rights, COOK stated that he is prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition and didn’t have an explanation as to why there was a live round in his pocket. He denied knowing about the handgun under the seat he was sitting in.
COOK consented to a DNA swab being taken. Swabs from the handgun were compared to COOK’s DNA by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. A major male DNA profile matching COOK’s DNA was identified in a mixture of four individuals from one of the swabs of the handgun’s sight and light attachments. In 2013, COOK was convicted of a crime of violence, felony Burglary in the Second Degree, in court file 27- CR-13-814. COOK was also convicted of Possession of a Firearm by an Ineligible Person in 2023 in court file 27-CR-21-18315, and he is still on probation for that offense.
COOK remains out of custody. Due to the serious nature of this offense, a warrant complaint is requested.
