On October 16, 2025, at approximately 8:59 P.M., while in the City of Duluth, County of St. Louis, State of Minnesota, Duluth Police Officers were dispatched to 24th Avenue East and E. #4 alley for a report of an accident. The reporting party advised that they believed the other driver was intoxicated. The officer met with the reporting party, LDA [DOB REDACTED], reported as she was headed southbound on Kent Road at 6th Street where Kent Street turns into 24th Avenue E., the other vehicle crossed over the center line into LDA's vehicle, sideswiped LDA's vehicle, and that vehicle continued southbound on 24th Avenue East.
LDA followed the vehicle until it stopped in the alley just below E. 4th Street and east of 24th Avenue E. The officer arrived on scene and observed the hitting vehicle, a 2026 GMC pickup truck with Minnesota personalized license plate: [PLATE REDACTED], located at the rear driveway of the approximate address 2402 E. 4th Street. While the officer was speaking with LDA, the officer observed the GMC truck kept shutting off and restarting its vehicle. The officer approached the GMC truck and identified a lone male occupant in the front driver's seat as the registered owner of the vehicle, Daniel Onni Ahonen [DOB REDACTED], hereinafter "Defendant." While speaking with Defendant, the officer observed Defendant's speech was slurred, pupils constricted, and slow motor movements.
Defendant acknowledged hitting another vehicle to the officer. Defendant asked the officer if they can do a blood test. When the officer asked Defendant why he would ask that, Defendant responded so they can know where his alcohol is at. Defendant had difficulty keeping his balance and could not remain in one place. Defendant admitted to the officer that he had too much alcohol. Defendant performed Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and showed indicators of impairment. Defendant submitted to a preliminary breath test, which yielded a result of.189 BrAC. Defendant was placed under arrest for suspected driving while impaired.
Upon being read the Minnesota Breath Test Advisory and after being advised of the right to speak to an attorney, Defendant consented to take the offered breath test. The result of the test indicated that Defendant's breath alcohol concentration was.21 g/210L at 10:21 P.M. Defendant does not have any prior qualified related offenses that would make this enhanceable.
