Abay is currently awaiting sentencing on other matters, having entered guilty pleas to charges including fifth degree drug possession, felony receiving stolen property, theft of a motor vehicle, and fleeing from police in a motor vehicle (see 62-CR-23-2184; 62-CR-23-2185; 62-CR-23-2305; and 62-CR-23-2331). On December 19, 2025, at 2357 hours, Ramsey County deputies and emergency medical personnel responded to the 200 block of County Rd B2 E, Little Canada, Ramsey County, on a report that A. A. Was having difficulty breathing.
When deputies arrived, A. A.’s mother, Jessica Regina Brandl Hewitt, [DOB REDACTED], stated that A. A. Needed Narcan. Deputies administered Narcan which brought the child [NAME REDACTED]. Testing at the hospital confirmed that A. A. Had overdosed on fentanyl. Hewitt said that she was sleeping with the children in the residence on the floor in the living room. She awoke to find A. A. In distress. She assumed that he had overdosed based on the previous overdose incident. She told deputies that Abay does not live with them and that Abay had not been to the house when she was there with the children.
She did acknowledge that Abay uses drugs. Deputies spoke to others at the residence who stated that Abay “comes and goes” from the residence. Deputies spoke to Hewitt’s 9-year-old son, K. H. A. He stated that his father, Abay, had been at the house prior to the overdose incident but he was out walking the dog when the commotion started with his brother. He stated that near bedtime he saw A. A. Holding a “black straw.” His mother took the straw from A. A. He later told investigators that it was his father’s black straw that had a substance inside of it.
His mom threw the straw away after she saw A. A. With the straw. He said that Abay was at the residence from December 17 through December 19. Additional evidence has come to light as well.
