The defendant said no, it was his landlord’s blood. Officer Hoefs and Lt. Wollenburg arrived and placed the defendant in handcuffs. Hoefs observed a small drop of dried blood near both the front right and left pocket of the defendant’s sweatpants. Officer Hoefs read the defendant the Miranda warning. The defendant agreed to speak with the officer. The defendant stated that he has had issues with his landlord because his landlord will not put proper locks on the building or his apartment. The defendant stated that he put his own locks on his apartment door and that upset his landlord (Victim A). The defendant said this made him very upset because he has been stabbed in the neck before, so he gets very defensive when someone pulls a weapon on him. The defendant stated that they also had an issue in the past where Victim A threatened him with a screwdriver. The defendant stated that he has told Victim A that if he is going to pull a screwdriver on him, he better stick him and kill him because the defendant will kill Victim A to protect himself. On that day, the defendant said he stepped out of his apartment and saw Victim A in the hallway.
The defendant asked Victim A what he was doing there and Victim A told the defendant that he does not get to tell him what to do. The defendant claimed that Victim A then pulled a screwdriver on him. The defendant said he then went back inside his apartment and grabbed his knife. The defendant said he went back out to the hallway where Victim A was and claimed Victim A tried to stick him with a screwdriver.
